PHARMACEUTICALS GlaxoSmithKline, the UK’s biggest drugs group, continued its recent purge of jobs yesterday when it announced that the group is set to lose a further 200 employees from its Barnard Castle plant. The cuts come as the group continues to move away from its reliance on big money blockbuster treatments as competition from generics pharmaceutical companies squeezes sales. The jobs will go among those producing Zofran, an anti-nausea treatment approaching the end of its patent protection. The move comes a week after GSK announced plans to cut 650 jobs at its Dartford factory, which made Lamictal for epilepsy and Valtrex for herpes, two other drugs that are facing increased competition.
